Caton Womens Institute

Caton’s W I ladies met at the Victoria Institute on April 15th, where our President welcomed everybody. A brief report on the recent Annual Council Meeting, which was held in Southport, was given before our guest speaker, Mr David Hartnup gave a talk on the well known Scarecrow Festival, which is held at Wray.   The Festival resulted from a trip to France when David and his wife saw a scarecrow hanging over a strawberry bed and were struck by its realism. He decided it would be appropriate and fun to start the festival/fair. People travel from far and near to see amazing hand-made scarecrows. If you have never been, the Scarecrow festival runs from Saturday 28th April to Monday 7th May.

Appropriately, our competition was for a miniature scarecrow, which was won by Jackie Dixon, Maureen Hayes and Margaret Graham being the runners up. Margaret also provided the flowers. A big thank you to the ladies who provide the tea and coffee.

May 3rd is a Members Resolutions meeting; our competition is a short poem.
