Caton Gala

Villagers are reminded that the Gala starts at the new time of 12noon on the field. The parade will start out from the Black Bull half an hour earlier this year at 11.30am.

Centre field entertainment is still being added to all the time, but so far a professional BMX bike riding act has been booked as have the Batala Drummers and a flying display by Birds of Prey. Main attractions include a Rodeo Bull, Gyroscope and the Bungee Trampoline. Caton St Paul’s School has agreed to provided a May Pole dancing team at the Gala.

The new Gala Secretary is Louise Stevens, Tel 770845, and she has written to this year’s Gala President the Rev Graham Pollitt outlining his duties for the day.

In addition to the Batala Drummers this year’s Gala will be entertained by music from a School Steel Band based in Lancaster. The Bay Radio who is hoping to come to the Gala again this year is looking for a sponsor. Could any business prepared to act as a sponsor please contact ‘The Bay Radio’ direct.

A new adult landscape painting and drawing competition is to be held at the Gala.

Category 1 - Paintings or drawings of the River Lune as seen from higher ground. Category 2 - Paintings or drawings of a bridge over the River Lune. The paintings and drawings will be judged separately. Anyone wishing to enter the art competitions should contact Tony Holloway Tel 771029 for an application form. Completed forms must be returned to 65 Broookhouse Road by Tuesday 23rd March at the latest.

It is hoped that more people from the villages of Caton and Brookhouse can be encouraged to attend this year. Although the Gala was originally mainly for families with small children the Committee has purposefully tried to widen its appeal over recent years with some success. We have expanded the Craft Tents and have introduce a new art element on to the field. We also have a professionally run Companion Dog and Pet Show held under Kennel Club rules and regulations which is again suitable for all ages. Last year the Committee spent over £1600 on central field entertainment suitable for all ages. So on Gala Day, stop whatever it is you are doing just for a few short hours, and come down to the field and see for yourself how interesting the Gala has become.

The Caton and Brookhouse Twinning Association have agreed to do the Tea and Coffee concession serving from the Pavilion.

If there is anybody out there who can help us on the day, even if its only later on in the afternoon can they please contact one of the Committee members. A full list of members can be viewed on the Gala website:- www.catongala.com   For more Gala information call John Hall on 770682.
