On Monday morning the only remaining live branch on the ancient oak tree at the fishsteps was broken off. The damage was done by a lorry reversing into The Croft.
Advice from the Tree Preservation Officer is to leave the trunk as it is in the hope it may regenerate. But also try to strike cuttings and find seedlings in the immediate area which may be children or grandchildren of this tree. It has been kept going for the last 23 years, after a support for it was erected on the initiative of Mick Jackson and Keith Popay. Many village organisations use the oak tree as their symbol.
