Caton Hall
Caton Hall can no longer be seen other than by viewing the lumps & bumps on satellite imagery. The map below shows the location of the hall. The 'highway leading to Lancaster' is Caton Green Road with Caton Green off to the left. St Pauls church can be seen on the right.
Caton Hall is marked on the map just below 'the grove'.

Figures are in acres-roods-poles, using the pole of 16 feet.
Letters are A = arable M = meadow P = pasture L = ley
Caton Hall, the Manor House of Caton, was situate in the fields above the deep bend in the Lune called the Dub. (from Celtic “llyn dubh” = black pool). Roger Garnet of Caton had his Hall there in 1230. In the 1500`s it belonged to the Baines family, of Crag House on top of Littledale. A son of Thomas Baines married a Fincham. When he died, his widow kept the Hall, which on her death passed to her brother Edward Fincham and thence to his descendents. Another Edward died in 1704 and his estate was divided between his 3 married daughters. The Hall appears to have been rebuilt in the 1600`s. The estate map is based on a survey in 1626. Eventually it fell into ruins and was pulled down about 1800.

This satellite image shows some of the area of the map. If you locate the light coloured field in the centre of the image, you will note a faint 'path' in the field to the right leading down to building. Note all the 'lumps & bumps in the area around that building. Click here for a detailed image of this area on Google Maps
